In support of the ISO London Declaration on Climate Change, ISO and IAF published the following joint communiqué on 22 February 2024:
Consequently ISO has amended points 4.1 and 4.2 of standards 9001, 14001, 45001 and 50001 to address the need to consider the effect of climate change on the ability to achieve the expected results of the management system. These changes will also be included in any new standards under development/revision. The general intent of the requirements for points 4.1 and 4.2 remains unchanged; these clauses already include the need for the organization to consider all internal and external factors that may affect the effectiveness of its management system; these new inclusions ensure that climate change is considered within the management system. Certified organizations must therefore ensure that they have considered the aspects and risks of climate change in the development, maintenance and effectiveness of their management systems. Climate change will need to be considered alongside other factors. If deemed relevant, it will be considered within a risk assessment, within the management system standards. Where an organization uses more than one management system (for example Quality Management and Health and Safety Management), it will need to ensure that climate change, if deemed relevant, is considered within each management system standard.
